Research

My main research is about international targeted sanctions. I have been working on this subject since 2005 and I am particularly interested in studying how sanctions differ from each other. I built on the existing literature on foreign policy tools and constructed a typology of sanctions based on how they are supposed to influence their targets. I focused mainly on the experience of the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU) since the end of the Cold War. I recently worked on the concept of the effectiveness of sanctions by looking at the experience of the EU.

My other research interests regard the role of private actors in the field of international security, the concept of political risk and judicial politics in the World Trade Organization.
